Recent intel from Tom French as of August 24, 2024:
The fishing at Crowley has been primarily in McGee area until the last two weeks. Initially we were having to utilize 34-36’ midge lines, now they are a respectable 8-12’ length. Now the best fishing is in the North Arm. Early in the summer a two to four fish day was the normal. Recently we have had outstanding days with hits every minute or so on midges (Copper Tiger and Albino Baron in the smaller size) and the punk perch as the upper fly on a midge rig with indicator, or pulled with a full sinking line.
Surprisingly the fish have been running in the 18 - 22 inch range with a 24 inch fish every second to third trip.
Float tubes can reach the productive areas without too much of a problem in the North Arm.
The Mammoth Basin area including Mary, Mamie, Twin Lakes (upper) is hit or miss. There was no stocking for three weeks in any of the lakes which made catching a decent fish a challenge. The Lakes were stocked again one week before I came home (3 days ago).
Access to the San Joaquin (Reds Meadow area) has been severely limited due to the road widening efforts taking place in this area and the fact that you can go down the road only on certain days.
Lake Mary should get very exciting once the fish leave the depths for the shallows. A week ago they were hunkered in the cool water at 50’.
Small Virginia and Big Virginia have been fishing well.
